Turning on my solar battery each evening has changed the way I think about electricity. Before installing it, I watched the utility meter climb during the expensive evening hours, especially when the heat pump and induction stove ran together. Now my rooftop solar panels charge the home battery through the afternoon, and the inverter automatically carries us through the peak period.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, beside the electrical panel, and connected it to a hybrid inverter. The first week taught me to adjust the battery reserve. I initially left 30 percent capacity untouched, which sounded sensible, but my house was buying electricity before sunrise on cloudy mornings. After checking the monitoring app, I lowered the reserve to 20 percent and let the battery discharge farther overnight. That small change made a surprisingly noticeable difference without leaving us vulnerable during an outage.
On a typical summer day, the panels produce roughly 24 kilowatt-hours, while our evening use is around 8 kilowatt-hours. The battery supplies most of that demand between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility charges are highest. My monthly bill fell from about $190 last summer to roughly $70. Solar generation varies, but the storage system prevents cheap midday power from going to waste. I especially notice the savings on weekends, when we cook dinner late and run laundry after sunset.
One evening, the app showed battery at 100 percent despite little solar production. A restart cleared the inverter warning, and support confirmed a firmware hiccup.
