Solution Solar Inverter
Having lived with rooftop solar for three years, I finally added a lithium iron phosphate home battery last spring. My main goal was simple: stop sending cheap midday electricity back to the grid and buy it back during expensive evening hours.
The installer mounted the battery in my garage, beside the inverter, and connected it to a critical-load panel. I had expected a whole home battery backup, but my older electrical panel made that impractical without a much bigger upgrade. At first I felt slightly disappointed, although the selected circuits still cover the refrigerator, internet, lights, gas furnace, and garage door.
The most noticeable change is peak-hour bill savings. I set the solar battery to charge from excess solar production and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, it usually reaches full charge by early afternoon, then carries most of our cooking, television, and air conditioning load through dinner. My utility statements show roughly $35–$50 less per month, depending on weather. That is not a dramatic number, but it adds up, especially after the utility raised its time-of-use rates.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me more than the installation manual. During a storm, the battery stopped discharging even though the app showed 78% remaining. I checked the breaker and found the backup gateway had rebooted. After waiting about five minutes, I restarted it through the app, and the system returned to normal. I later learned that the gateway had installed firmware overnight. Since then, I have disabled automatic updates during our usual evening usage window and have not seen the issue again.
For me, the battery is less about energy independence and more about predictable comfort. Evening solar savings and backup power make this investment feel worthwhile, without pretending it completely erased my monthly electric bill.
