I installed a small solar battery system last autumn, mainly because my electricity bills were getting painful during the evening peak. My setup is fairly modest: six rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and one 5 kWh battery pack built around lifepo4 60ah cells. I am not trying to live completely off grid, but I wanted to stop buying so much expensive power after dinner.
The biggest difference showed up on my first full month. Before the battery, my household routinely used the grid from five until ten p.m., when rates were highest. Now the solar panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the battery carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and television through most of that period.
At the end of the month, my bill was about $48 lower than the same month last year, despite slightly higher usage. That is not a dramatic number, but it feels real because the system is doing its best work when grid electricity costs the most. On sunny days, I sometimes still have 60 percent battery charge left at breakfast.
My only annoyance came during a particularly cloudy week. The inverter stopped discharging the battery overnight, even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the obvious things first: battery state of charge, breaker, wiring, and the time-of-use schedule. Eventually I noticed the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80 percent after a firmware update. That left only a tiny usable portion for normal cycling. Lowering the reserve to 20 percent fixed it immediately, and the next morning the battery was back to normal.
I now check the monitoring app once or twice a week, rather than obsessing over it. The battery is quiet, the lithium iron phosphate chemistry gives me confidence, and the savings are easiest to notice.
