I installed a victron easysolar 48 5000 in my garage last spring, paired with a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and 3.6 kW of rooftop solar. My main reason was simple: our electricity company charges much more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when my family cooks, runs the dishwasher, and settles in for the evening. Before the battery, those hours noticeably pushed up our monthly bill.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. An installer mounted the inverter, added a battery isolator, and connected the system to the existing solar array. I spent the first week watching the Victron app almost obsessively. On a sunny day, solar power runs the house first, then fills the battery; after sunset, the stored energy takes over automatically. I did have one small hiccup: the battery stopped discharging because its state of charge limit had been set too conservatively. A quick settings adjustment, after checking the manual and calling the installer, fixed it. Since then, the monitoring screen has been reassuringly boring.
The biggest difference shows up on the bill. During the first full month, our grid consumption during peak hours fell by roughly 70 percent. Our bill dropped from about $185 to $112, even though the weather was similar and we used the same appliances. That is not a perfect monthly saving—the utility still charges connection fees, and cloudy weeks mean I occasionally buy electricity at night—but the battery has made our usage much less exposed to peak rates. I also appreciate the backup capability. When a storm caused a brief outage, the essential circuits kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running without any intervention.
I'm learning how seasonal temperatures affect battery performance, but for me this solar energy storage system feels practical and worthwhile.
