electric car motor

Last summer I installed a 10 kWh home battery alongside my rooftop solar panels, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the expensive peak-hour rate. The installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The electrician mounted the inverter and battery in our garage in one day, then spent the following morning checking the monitoring app and explaining the backup settings. I chose self-consumption mode, so daytime solar power fills the battery first, and the stored energy runs our house after sunset.

The difference showed up most clearly between 5 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our dishwasher, induction cooktop, lights, and electric car motor charger all pulled from the grid when solar production had stopped. Now, the battery handles nearly all of that load. My monthly bill fell by roughly $65 during the first full month, although weather and utility rates obviously change. I also noticed fewer nasty surprises on cloudy days because the battery reserves enough charge for dinner and bedtime routines.

The one minor hiccup happened during a heat wave. The app showed the battery at 18%, even though I expected more. I checked the inverter and found a communication warning. Power-cycling the gateway cleared it after about five minutes, and the battery resumed charging normally. Support later confirmed it was a temporary Wi-Fi drop, not a battery failure. That experience made me appreciate having a manual backup reserve setting; I now keep 25% available for outages instead of draining everything overnight.

I am not pretending this system eliminated my electric bill. There is still a connection charge, and winter solar output is modest. Still, watching the battery charge from sunlight, then carry our evening routine through peak hours feels practical, not magical. The win is predictable peak-hour savings and quieter backup during short outages.
