1st winter with my home battery was when I finally noticed the difference during the evening peak period. Before installing a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, our solar panels produced plenty at lunchtime, but we still pulled electricity from the grid after dinner.

Now the battery charges from solar and carries us through the expensive hours. My utility rate jumps from about 14 cents to 31 cents per kWh between 4 and 9 p.m. Last summer, our monthly bill averaged $210. After the storage system was commissioned, it settled around $128, even though our household habits did not change. That is roughly $82 saved each month, which feels more meaningful than the payback estimates I read before buying.

The biggest surprise has been how quiet and boring the setup is. I use the app to check battery state of charge, not to tweak it. I set a 20% backup reserve because outages are common here, and the inverter switches over quickly enough that our lights barely flicker. During one cloudy week, I noticed the battery reaching reserve before bedtime. The culprit was a pair of outdoor h1 bulbs left on all night. Once I replaced their timer, the system returned to normal, and I appreciated that the monitoring screen showed exactly where energy was going.

I have not expanded the battery yet, although I am considering another module before next summer. My lesson is to size storage around your actual evening load rather than chasing the largest capacity. We use about 8kWh after sunset, so the current battery fits well. Solar self-consumption is noticeably higher, and I export less surplus at the low feed-in rate.

For me, the value is not just the lower bill. It is having costs and backup power without changing how our family lives.
