I installed my home solar battery last spring, mostly because our utility had started making evening electricity painfully expensive. I chose a 10-kWh lithium phosphate battery cell system and paired it with the existing rooftop solar panels rather than replacing everything. The installer finished in one day, including the hybrid inverter, wall-mounted battery, disconnect switch, and monitoring app.
My only real complaint was that the app took several days to show accurate state-of-charge readings. At first, it jumped from 42 percent to 68 percent overnight, which made me wonder whether the solar battery had a problem. The installer updated the firmware remotely, and the numbers settled down within a day.
The biggest difference appears between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, we used to run the oven, lights, dishwasher, and air conditioner straight from the grid during those hours. Now the panels charge the battery during the day, and the battery covers most of our evening load. I still buy some power on cloudy winter days, but peak-hour consumption has fallen dramatically.
Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $92 over the first three comparable months. That is not a perfect half, since fixed charges remain, but the savings are obvious.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I do not have to remember to flip switches or babysit a solar battery backup system. During one storm, the grid flickered twice, and the battery took over so quickly that our router never restarted. I tested it later with the microwave and refrigerator running together; the inverter handled both without a warning.
I have not expanded the system yet, although the app shows enough spare capacity for another battery module. For now, I am keeping the money in my pocket and watching how winter affects the results.
