My utility’s peak rate runs from 4pm to 9pm, so shifting usage into stored energy has cut my expensive imports dramatically. My monthly bill used to average around $180 in summer. Last summer, with similar weather, it averaged roughly $72. That is roughly $108 saved each month, although I still pay a small connection charge and export credits vary. On cloudy weeks, the savings are smaller, but I am no longer nervous when afternoon electricity prices climb.

The one hiccup happened during a three-day stretch of rain. The battery showed a low state of charge warning and did not recharge overnight. I checked the monitoring app and saw the inverter had lost its Wi-Fi connection, not failed hardware. Rebooting the router and power-cycling the communication gateway fixed it in about ten minutes. Since then I have enabled a notification for offline status, which feels more useful than discovering a problem on the next bill.

Overall, the solar pv and battery storage setup has not made me completely energy independent, and I do not pretend it has. On winter mornings, I still draw grid power, and the battery reserve is deliberately kept for outages rather than maximum savings.
