Viewing my electricity bill used to be the least enjoyable part of the month, especially during summer when the air conditioner ran through the evening. I installed a home solar battery last spring, mainly to store excess daytime solar power and use it during peak-rate hours. The difference was noticeable almost immediately.
My setup is a 6.5 kW rooftop solar array paired with a 14 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. Before ordering, I spent far too long comparing cycle life, usable capacity, inverter compatibility, and charging limits. I even kept the exact phrase “eve 230ah datasheet” in my notes while checking cell specifications and battery bank options. I am not an electrician, so the installer handled the wiring, isolator, monitoring gateway, and final safety checks.
The best part is what happens between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. My utility charges much more then, but the battery now supplies most of the house. It runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and usually the heat-pump water heater without needing grid power. On sunny days, the battery reaches full charge by early afternoon. My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $210 to between $85 and $110, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use. That is real savings, not just a nice graph in an app.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. For three evenings, the battery stopped discharging at 30 percent even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. It turned out the backup reserve setting had been changed during a firmware update. I lowered the reserve to 15 percent, restarted the inverter, and everything returned to normal.
The battery has not made me completely independent from the grid, but it has made our solar system much more useful. I now think of power prices in two periods: charge cheaply with sunlight, then use that stored energy when electricity costs the most. That simple change has been the biggest practical win for me.
