After installing a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery last spring, I stopped feeling like my rooftop solar panels were giving away their electricity.
During sunny days, the panels charge the battery by early afternoon. I set the system to hold enough energy for our evening peak period, when the utility rate jumps. Instead of buying power for cooking dinner, washing clothes, and running the heat pump, I use stored solar energy. Last month, our bill was $68, compared with $142 during the same season before the solar battery was installed. That’s roughly $74 saved, although weather and our thermostat settings change from month to month.
What surprised me most was how quiet the battery operates. I hear the inverter fan briefly around lunchtime, but at night the system is invisible. I can check the state of charge in an app, yet I rarely need to touch it.
