Solution Solar Battery
Once I started using my solar and battery storage system last summer, I was hoping to cut the evening electricity rates. My solar panels already covered most daytime use, but the difference came from adding a 10-kWh home battery.
I set the battery to charge from solar during the afternoon and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. That schedule has been effective. Before installation, I saw $5–$7 of usage during peak hours on days when the air conditioner ran. Now, my evening grid consumption is usually close to zero. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in July to $92 last July, even though our usage was similar. The savings are not every month because weather leaves less energy to store, but seeing the battery carry us through dinner, laundry, and the night feels worthwhile.
The hiccup happened during a firmware update. One morning the monitoring app showed the battery at 100%, but it was not discharging that evening. I checked the inverter and found the reserve had been reset to 30%. I changed it back to 10%, restarted the battery controller, and operation returned. The installer explained that the reserve setting protects against outages, so I now leave 20% instead of chasing every dollar of savings.
What I appreciate most is the quiet operation. I do not have to think about switching appliances or watching prices constantly. The solar battery charges when panels are productive and helps during the window. I pull power from the grid on rainy stretches, but the battery storage system has made those purchases smaller and more predictable. For my home, the combination of solar panels, a lithium-ion battery, and sensible time-of-use settings has been a practical upgrade rather than a flashy gadget.
