Running my home on a solar battery has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate storage unit last spring beside my inverter, and the biggest surprise was how ordinary the experience feels. During sunny afternoons, my panels charge the battery instead of sending everything to the grid. After dinner, I run the dishwasher, induction cooktop, and washing machine from stored power.
Before storage, my utility bill averaged about $165 monthly. Now it is usually between $105 and $120, even though our household habits have not changed much. The real savings come between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when my time-of-use rate is highest. I have the battery programmed to discharge during those hours, and it normally covers nearly all of our evening demand. On cloudy days, it runs low by bedtime, but I still see a noticeable difference.
My one annoying moment came in July. The battery stopped discharging, and the app showed a communication error. I checked the cables, restarted the inverter, and discovered our Wi-Fi router had updated overnight. Reconnecting it took five minutes, and the battery immediately resumed normal operation. That small incident taught me to keep the system firmware current and not assume a hardware failure.
I also learned that battery capacity is not the same as usable capacity. The monitoring app shows reserve settings, and I keep 15% available for outages rather than draining it completely. During a brief winter outage, the solar battery powered our refrigerator, modem, and a few lights without any fuss. It did not run the electric water heater, but I never expected that from a 10kWh unit.
One unexpected detail: my partner kept calling the remote sensor a “cr2032 battery,” although that coin cell has nothing to do with the main solar storage system.
