Solution Solar Inverter -
Solution LiFePO4 Battery Cell
I installed my battery last spring, and the surprise was how quickly our evening electricity use changed. We paired a lifepo 280ah basen battery bank with 5 kW of rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a meter. Before storage, our panels shut down when the sun disappeared, so cooking, laundry, and air-conditioning all pulled expensive grid power after dinner.
Now the battery charges from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then discharges during peak hours. On a sunny day, it reaches about 90% before dinner and carries us through the evening. I have programmed a 20% reserve, so the usable capacity is smaller, but that buffer makes me more comfortable during outages. Our utility’s peak rate is roughly three times the overnight rate, and shifting those evening loads has reduced our monthly bill by about $70 in summer. That number changes with weather, but seeing the battery dashboard show “self-consumption” above 80% is satisfying.
The difference is quiet. The refrigerator, internet equipment, and lights keep running without any noticeable switch-over when the grid drops. During one storm, the battery stayed online for six hours, although I avoided using the electric oven and ran the heat pump sparingly. I did discover that the inverter app reported a communication fault after a router update. Power cycling the router and reconnecting the Wi-Fi dongle fixed it; the battery itself never stopped working.
I still check the state of charge before a cloudy day and avoid treating the storage system like unlimited backup power. For me, the value is less about energy independence and more about using my own solar energy instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back at peak prices. After several months, the lithium battery has made our solar setup feel much more useful, especially from sunset until bedtime.
