Early last summer, I added a battery bank to my rooftop solar setup after getting tired of buying power from the grid every evening. I chose a renogy 12v 100ah smart lithium iron phosphate battery for a small backup system in my garage. My main goal was simple: store midday solar energy and use it during the expensive evening hours.
Installation was easier than I expected. I mounted the battery in a ventilated cabinet, connected it to a 12V inverter and charge controller, and added a fuse close to the battery terminal. The Bluetooth monitoring feature has been especially useful. I can check battery voltage, state of charge, charging current, and temperature from my phone instead of guessing what is happening.
Before adding the solar battery, my electricity use usually jumped between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., when everyone was home cooking, running fans, and watching television. Now the battery handles most of that load. On sunny days, the solar panels recharge it by early afternoon, and I switch the inverter over before peak pricing begins. My evening grid usage has dropped noticeably, and my monthly bill is usually $25 to $40 lower, depending on the weather. That is not a dramatic overnight transformation, but it is a steady saving I can actually see.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging because I had accidentally left the charge controller set to the wrong lithium battery profile. Once I selected the correct LiFePO4 setting, charging returned to normal. I also learned not to run high-draw appliances like my microwave and portable heater from this small setup at the same time.
After several months, the battery still performs consistently, with no noticeable capacity loss. For my home, this solar energy storage setup is less about complete energy independence and more about using my own solar power when electricity costs the most.
