Keeping the lights on during evening blackouts was not my main reason for installing a 5 kwh lithium ion battery; I mainly wanted to stop buying expensive grid electricity after sunset.
My rooftop solar panels generate plenty during the day, but before the battery, I would send surplus power to the utility and then pull it back at peak rates. The battery changed that routine immediately. My installer mounted the compact home energy storage unit in the garage, connected it to the inverter, and finished the wiring in an afternoon. The app was fairly clear: it showed solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and whether we were importing or exporting electricity.
On a typical sunny day, I reach full charge around lunchtime. From roughly 4 p.m. until bedtime, the battery carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the dishwasher. That is the most satisfying part. Our evening usage no longer pushes us into the utility’s expensive peak window. My monthly bill fell by about 30 percent, though the exact savings vary with cloudy weather and heating use. On especially sunny months, I saved close to $45, which makes the solar battery feel worthwhile rather than theoretical.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app displayed “offline” while the battery was still operating. I checked the breaker and communication cable, then restarted the gateway. The connection returned after about ten minutes. My installer also explained that the battery had continued following its last programmed schedule, so I did not actually lose backup power.
I now keep the battery reserve at 20 percent instead of draining it completely. That leaves backup power for outages without sacrificing much daily savings. I am considering adding another module eventually, but for our current two-person household, this lithium battery storage setup has been practical and unobtrusive.
