8 months ago I installed a 48v 100a lithium battery beside my inverter, and the biggest surprise has been how often I forget about the power bill. My rooftop solar system was already producing well, but before storage, excess afternoon energy went back to the grid while we bought electricity again after dinner.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. I mounted the battery on a garage wall, ran appropriately sized cables to the hybrid inverter, and had an electrician check the isolator, breakers, grounding, and battery settings. The battery management system appeared in the inverter app immediately, although I spent an evening correcting the charge voltage and state-of-charge readings. Once those values were calibrated, the numbers became believable.
Our main savings happen between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the children are home, dinner is cooking, and the heat-pump water heater may run. On sunny days, the battery reaches roughly 95 percent before late afternoon. It then carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and kitchen appliances through the expensive period. I usually finish the evening around 35 to 45 percent, rather than drawing from the grid at peak rates. Our monthly bill has dropped by about 30 to 40 percent, though winter is noticeably less impressive because cloudy days limit solar charging.
The most useful feature is the reserve setting. I keep 20 percent untouched for outages, instead of draining the battery completely every night. During one short blackout, the inverter switched over quickly enough that the router stayed online, which felt more valuable than the lights.
I still check the battery monitor a few times a week, especially during cold weather. I have not needed repairs, and the fan noise is barely noticeable from inside the house. For me, this battery simply makes peak-hour electricity less painful.
