Running our home on solar power felt great until I saw how much electricity we still bought from the grid after sunset. Last summer, I added a 10-kWh wall-mounted solar battery, and the biggest change has been shifting our evening use away from expensive peak hours.
Our installer mounted the battery beside the inverter and connected it to our rooftop solar system. The financial difference is clearest between 4 and 9 p.m. Before storage, our heat pump and cooking pushed us into the utility company's peak rate. Now the battery charges from midday solar and discharges through that window. My bill has dropped by $35–$55, depending on weather and heating demand. Even on cloudy days, the battery usually covers dinner and the first part of the evening.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The app showed “standby” while the battery was nearly full, and I assumed something had failed. A quick check found the system was waiting for the programmed peak period; restarting anything would have been unnecessary. The installer confirmed it the next morning. Since then, I mostly leave it alone and enjoy quieter, more predictable energy costs.
