Running my rooftop solar panels with a home battery has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before the battery, I used most of my solar power during the day and bought expensive grid electricity after dinner.
I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery last spring. The installer recommended a system built around a prismatic lithium cell, and I was mainly interested in usable capacity and the battery management system, not fancy app features. The physical installation took one afternoon: inverter beside the breaker panel, battery on the garage wall, and new conduit running outside. It was tidy enough that my wife stopped complaining about it after the first day.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. My energy storage system now charges from excess solar and runs the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and induction cooktop through the evening. On sunny months, my utility bill dropped from roughly $180 to $70, even with air conditioning. That is not a miracle saving every month—cloudy weather and winter still hurt—but peak rate usage has nearly disappeared.
I did have one small scare. The battery stopped discharging during a heatwave, and the app showed a communication error. I power-cycled the inverter, waited five minutes, then checked the battery disconnect switch. It restarted normally, but I later learned the system had paused itself because the garage temperature passed its protection limit. I added a small ventilation fan and moved a thermometer nearby. Since then, it has been stable.
Most importantly, I appreciate the control: I can watch charge levels, solar production, and grid use, then run appliances from stored energy after sunset without guessing each evening at home comfortably.
