I installed a li ion battery beside my garage last spring, mostly because our electricity bills were becoming ridiculous after sunset. Our solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we were still buying expensive power from the grid between 4 and 9 p.m. The battery changed that routine immediately.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar first. I watched the monitoring app obsessively for the first week. By late afternoon, the battery usually reached 95 to 100 percent, then carried the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat pump through the evening. On sunny days, our grid consumption after dinner dropped almost to zero.
The clearest result showed up on the bill. Before adding storage, our monthly bill averaged about $185 during the hottest months. Afterward, it fell to roughly $72, even though our household habits stayed about the same. That is not a perfect comparison because weather changes, but the peak-hour savings were obvious. We are not “off grid”; the solar battery simply lets us use more of our own solar energy instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back later.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. During a short outage, the battery backup switched on, but the app displayed “communication lost.” The essential circuits were still working, so I waited, restarted the gateway, and checked the breaker. The warning disappeared after about ten minutes. Since then, I have tested backup power twice, and both times the transition was quick enough that the clocks barely noticed.
For me, the benefit is predictability. I can see the battery state of charge, plan around cloudy days, and worry less about peak rates. The upfront cost was significant, but the control feels worthwhile.
