Over the past six months, my powerwall solar system has changed the way I think about our electricity bill. Before it, I mostly watched our rooftop solar panels produce energy and sent excess back to the grid. The home battery now keeps daytime power for expensive evening hours, which is the feature I appreciate most.
On our time-of-use plan, dinner and laundry used to push our bill up quickly, especially between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. Now I usually come home with the battery around 70% state of charge. We run the induction cooktop, dishwasher, lights, and heat-pump water heater from stored energy instead of buying it at peak rates. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $210 to $115 on average. Saving about $95 a month feels very real. During sunny months, the battery makes better use of our own solar generation.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week. I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 6:00pm, although the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked breakers, restarted the monitoring app, and waited; nothing changed. A support technician found a software update had left the inverter in standby mode. After a remote reset, the system worked normally. I now glance at the energy flow screen every couple of days, especially after updates. I keep a small backup reserve rather than draining it entirely, because outages are possible.
That backup power has helped during two outages, when the refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and lights stayed on. I like knowing the battery storage system covers essentials without a generator. I am still learning how weather, household habits, and battery capacity affect savings. On bright days, I finish with plenty left; on rainy days, I delay laundry until midday. For my home, the win is simple: using solar energy after sunset instead of selling it cheaply. It has made our electricity costs more predictable and the investment feel practical.
