Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my inverter to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but before the battery, the house still pulled power from the grid every night.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and configured a 20% reserve for outages. I spent the first week watching the energy monitoring app obsessively. It was surprisingly satisfying seeing solar power charge the battery in the afternoon and then feed the refrigerator, lights, and Wi-Fi overnight.
The biggest practical difference showed up on my bill. Before storage, my monthly electricity cost averaged about $185. After adding the battery, it fell to roughly $92, even though our usage stayed similar. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison because utility rates changed, but shifting evening consumption to stored solar clearly helped.
I had one small troubleshooting moment in July. The app showed the battery at 100%, yet the inverter was still importing grid power. I checked the settings and found that backup mode had accidentally been enabled after a firmware update. Re-selecting self-consumption mode fixed it immediately. I appreciated finding the cause myself, although the settings menu could be clearer.
After eight months, the lifepo4 ru battery has remained quiet, with no noticeable capacity loss and only occasional fan noise from the inverter. During an outage, it switched over fast enough that the lights flickered and the router stayed online.
For me, the value is less about energy independence as a slogan and more about predictable bills and using more of my own solar power. I would size the system carefully rather than automatically add more storage; my current battery capacity covers a normal night comfortably.
