Our solar battery went live last summer, and the first thing I noticed was how quiet our evenings became. Instead of buying electricity when the utility rate changed, we used energy stored during the afternoon. I installed a 10 kWh po4 lithium battery beside the inverter, mainly to reduce peak-hour consumption rather than chase total energy independence.
Before adding storage, our evening usage was expensive. Cooking, laundry, the heat-pump water heater, and air conditioning often pushed us into the highest tariff period. Our summer electric bills averaged around $210. After adjusting the battery settings to charge from solar between late morning and mid-afternoon, then discharge from 4 p.m. until bedtime, the comparable bills dropped to roughly $125. The exact savings vary with cloudy weather, but saving about $70 to $90 per month has been realistic for us. I also like seeing the solar battery cover short evening loads instead of sending every extra panel watt back to the grid for a small credit.
The only annoying moment happened during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at about 40 percent, even though the app showed plenty of capacity remaining. I initially thought the lithium battery was defective, but the installer explained that the backup reserve had been set too high. We lowered the reserve to 20 percent, kept a higher setting for stormy weeks, and the system behaved normally afterward. That small troubleshooting lesson taught me not to judge performance from one screen or one day.
Now I check the monitoring app every few days, not constantly. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon and carries us through dinner and the evening. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made our solar investment noticeably more useful, especially during expensive peak hours.
