Solution Solar Battery
Finally, after watching my electricity bills climb every summer, I installed a 13.5-kWh solar battery at home. My rooftop solar panels already covered much of our daytime use, but the battery changed what happened after sunset.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. I spent an evening in the monitoring app, setting it to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility’s time-of-use rates are highest. That simple schedule has been the biggest money-saver.
Before storage, our evening cooking, laundry, and air conditioning pushed us into the expensive tier. Now the battery usually carries those loads, and our monthly bill fell from roughly $210 to $82 over the hottest months. It is not a magic zero-dollar bill: cloudy stretches still require grid power, and the battery reserves about 20 percent for backup. Still, seeing the meter stay nearly flat during peak hours feels genuinely satisfying.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped discharging at night. The app showed “standby,” even though the battery was 74 percent full. I power-cycled the inverter and checked the backup reserve setting, which had somehow changed from 20 to 100 percent. Resetting it fixed the problem immediately. That experience taught me to leave reserve settings alone during updates and check the app rather than assume the system was broken.
For anyone comparing a solar battery or an off grid generator and battery system, I would prioritize usable capacity, inverter compatibility, and clear software controls over impressive headline capacity. In my case, the practical win is quiet: fewer peak-rate purchases, steadier evening power, and a little more confidence when storms knock out the grid.
