I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery beside my inverter last spring, and the difference during peak hours has been surprisingly noticeable. Before that, our rooftop solar produced plenty at lunchtime, but we sent much of it back to the grid for a modest credit. By dinner, the panels were quiet and we were buying expensive electricity.
Now the battery charges between late morning and afternoon, then runs the refrigerator, internet gear, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the evening rate window. I usually see the state of charge around 35 percent when I wake up, even after cooking dinner and running laundry the night before.
My utility bills fell from roughly $185 a month to $92 over the first three comparable months. That is not a laboratory guarantee—weather and our habits still matter—but the peak-hour savings are real. We did not change our routine to chase every watt. The battery simply makes the solar energy usable later, which feels much better than watching surplus power disappear on the monitoring app.
The only hiccup came during a two-day cloudy stretch. I noticed the backup reserve had dropped to 10 percent because I had accidentally left the system in a more aggressive self-consumption mode. I switched the reserve setting to 25 percent and checked the battery firmware through the app. No technician visit was needed; the next sunny day restored normal operation.
One odd detail: while searching online for a compact tool to tighten the enclosure screws, I saw a product listing titled “mini massage gun custom.” It has nothing to do with my solar battery, but the phrase stuck in my head because the tool was sitting beside the inverter during setup.
Six months in, the battery is quiet, predictable, and useful to me.
