I installed a 10 kWh home battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My solar panels usually finish producing around 4 p.m., just when our household starts cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging devices. Before the battery, those hours were the most painful part of my electricity bill.
The system uses lifepo4 prismatic cells 280ah, and I chose LiFePO4 chemistry because I wanted something suited to daily cycling rather than occasional backup use. The installer connected the battery to a hybrid inverter and set it to charge from solar first, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Setup took most of a day. The physical installation was straightforward, although getting the monitoring app to recognize the battery took several attempts.
After the first full month, I noticed the biggest difference in the evening. On sunny days, the battery covers nearly all of our cooking and lighting load until bedtime. My average daily grid usage dropped from roughly 18 kWh to 7 or 8 kWh. Based on my utility rates, that has been saving me about $70 to $90 per month, depending on the weather. I still pull power from the grid on cloudy days, but the peak-hour reduction is consistent.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the app showed a healthy charge level. I eventually found that a firmware update had reset the time-of-use schedule. Re-entering the discharge hours fixed it, and I have not seen the problem again.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I do not think about the battery during the day; I just notice the lower bill. I am considering adding another battery module eventually, but for now this solar energy storage setup gives me practical savings without changing how my family uses electricity.
