I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, pairing it with my rooftop solar and a hybrid inverter. The installer finished in one day, but I spent the weekend learning the monitoring app and adjusting the reserve setting. I chose a 20% backup reserve because our neighborhood has evening outages, while still leaving plenty of capacity for nightly use.
Before the battery, my electric bill jumped whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and used air conditioning after sunset. Now the battery charges from excess solar during the afternoon and discharges automatically from around 4 p.m. through the evening peak. My utility uses time-of-use rates, so this timing matters more than the raw amount of energy stored. In the first month, my bill was about $38 lower than the same month last year, despite similar weather and usage. Over the next few months, my savings averaged $30 to $45. That is not dramatic money overnight, but it makes the battery feel worthwhile and predictable.
The most useful surprise has been seeing how little attention it needs. Once, the monitoring app showed the battery at 100% while the house was still pulling power from the grid. I checked the inverter and found a scheduled charge setting left enabled after a firmware update. Disabling it restored normal solar charging that afternoon. I also learned that my mini inverter for the garage array needed its own ventilation clearance. It had not failed; it simply throttled on a hot day, and the app made that clear once I read the temperature graph.
I have since moved a box away from it and have seen steadier output. The system now covers most evening lighting, refrigeration, and cooking, while the grid handles heavy loads when the battery is low overnight.
