Eighteen months ago I added a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mostly because our evening electricity use was wiping out the benefit of generating power during the day. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, ran a new cable to the inverter, and had the app showing charge levels before lunch. I did spend an afternoon checking connections and reading the manual, but there was no complicated DIY drama. I use a “test lifepo4 battery” checklist whenever I check voltage, temperature, and backup behavior.
The biggest change is peak-hour savings. My utility’s expensive period starts at 4 p.m., so the battery charges from excess solar around midday and carries the house through dinner. Before storage, I regularly pulled 6–8 kWh from the grid each evening. Now that usually falls below 1 kWh, unless we run the clothes dryer and air conditioner together. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $185 to $105 over the summer, after accounting for the battery’s financing payment. That is not a perfect payback story, but the lower peak usage is easy to see in the utility graphs.
I also like having backup power, although I did not buy the system mainly for outages. During a storm last winter, the lights flickered three times and the battery switched over without any noticeable interruption. It kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights running, but not the electric water heater. That limitation was useful to learn before expecting whole-home backup.
My only real troubleshooting moment came when the monitoring app showed the battery at 100% while the inverter reported zero solar production. I rebooted the gateway, checked the Wi-Fi, and discovered a scheduled maintenance window had paused updates. After it finished, the readings matched again. I now glance at battery health once a week.
