4pm used to be the point when our house started getting expensive. Before installing a 24v 100ah battery with my rooftop solar system, I would watch the inverter send power back to the grid all afternoon, then buy it back during the evening peak. That pattern changed more than I expected.

The setup itself was fairly straightforward. I mounted the battery in a dry utility closet, connected it to the charge controller and hybrid inverter, and set the app to charge from solar first and discharge between 4pm and 9pm. I had an electrician check the cable sizing and breaker arrangement, which was worth doing for peace of mind.

My first month was the real test. Our evening loads include the induction cooktop, heat-pump water heater, refrigerator, and two laptops. Instead of pulling from the grid when rates were highest, the solar battery covered nearly everything. My bill fell from about $186 to $119, even though the weather was mixed. That is $67 saved in one month, and I could actually see the battery doing its job in the monitoring app.

There was a minor hiccup during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 30% state of charge, while I expected it to reach 20%. I initially thought the lithium battery was faulty, but the backup reserve setting had accidentally been changed after a firmware update. Restoring the reserve fixed it immediately. Since then, I have kept that reserve because a little emergency backup is useful during outages.

The best surprise is how quiet the system feels. I rarely think about it now; I just notice the lower peak-hour bill and fewer grid imports. I am considering adding another solar battery before next summer, but I will first compare usable capacity, cycle life, and warranty carefully.
