I installed a 5kWh LiFePO4 battery beside my hybrid inverter last autumn, mostly to stop buying so much electricity during the evening peak. My solar panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon, and the system switches over automatically when the sun goes down. That simple change has made the biggest difference to my daily routine.
Before adding storage, I would come home, turn on the oven, heat pump, and washing machine, and watch the smart meter climb. Now the battery covers most of those loads until around 9 or 10 p.m. On an average sunny day, my evening grid use has dropped from roughly 7kWh to less than 2kWh. My monthly bill is typically £35–£50 lower, although winter savings are obviously smaller because there is less solar energy available.
The battery has been quiet and surprisingly uneventful. I set a reserve level of 20 percent, so it keeps a little energy available for an outage rather than draining completely every night. I also adjusted the inverter’s charge schedule after noticing it occasionally charged from the grid before sunrise. That was not a battery fault; I had simply left a time-of-use setting enabled from the installation testing.
One small practical lesson: I initially searched for a “lifepo4 charger 12v” because I thought I might need a separate charger for balancing and maintenance. For my installed home storage battery, the inverter handles charging properly, so I did not need one. That search did help me understand the difference between a 12V battery setup and a high-voltage solar battery system, though.
So far, the best part is not seeing dramatic zero bills. It is using more of my own solar power instead of exporting it cheaply, especially while cooking dinner. The battery state-of-charge display has become something I check casually, like the weather, and the whole setup feels practical rather than complicated.
