hykon inverter

Yesterday I checked my electricity app before making coffee, and saw something that still makes me smile: our solar battery had carried the house through the previous evening, so we used almost no grid power during the expensive hours.

I installed a 10 kWh home battery last spring alongside rooftop solar. The main reason was not energy independence in the dramatic sense; it was avoiding the evening tariff. Our utility charges much more from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when dinner, laundry, and homework push demand up.

I chose a hykon inverter because the installer had used it on two nearby homes and could support it locally. The installation took most of a day. The crew mounted the battery in the garage, added the backup gateway, and connected the monitoring app. I appreciated that they explained the shutdown procedure instead of simply leaving me with a manual.

The difference on sunny days is straightforward. Solar panels fill the battery after lunch, then the battery supplies the refrigerator, lights, induction cooktop, and Wi-Fi after sunset. Before storage, our summer bill averaged about $185. Since adding the battery, it has usually been $105 to $125, depending on air-conditioning. That is roughly $60-$80 saved monthly, not a magic zero-dollar bill. On cloudy weeks, the battery sometimes charges from the grid overnight under a cheaper rate, which also helps.

My only real hiccup happened in July. The app showed the battery at 100%, but it would not discharge during peak hours. I found that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 80% after a firmware update. Lowering it to 25% fixed the behavior immediately. I now check settings after updates rather than assuming everything stayed the same.

It made evening costs predictable, and I would add another battery before buying more panels.
