Solution Solar Inverter
Nearly two years ago I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar setup, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My main equipment is a 5-kW inverter for home use and the battery sits in the garage beside the electrical panel.
Setup was straightforward. I set it to charge from surplus solar during the afternoon and discharge after 4 p.m., when our utility's rates jump. That simple schedule has made the biggest difference to my bills.
Before the battery, our summer electric bill usually landed around $180 to $220. After adding storage, it has generally been $70 to $110, depending on how hot the month is and whether we run the heat pump overnight. I am not claiming the battery erased my bill; winter clouds and short days still matter. But avoiding those peak-hour purchases has saved roughly $600 to $800 per year for us.
The most satisfying part is coming home at 6 p.m., starting the oven, and seeing the house draw power from the battery instead of the grid. We also run the dishwasher overnight without thinking about peak pricing. I verify savings against my utility bill each month carefully.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging one evening. The inverter showed a warning rather than an outright failure. I restarted the system through the app, checked the backup reserve setting, and it resumed normally the next day. Customer support later confirmed the update had reset the operating mode.
For me, solar battery storage is worthwhile mainly because it shifts my solar energy into the hours when electricity costs most. I would buy it again, but I would size the battery alongside my actual nighttime usage, not just the biggest panel array I could afford.
