8 months ago, I added a home solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid power in the evening. My setup is fairly modest: 4.8 kW of solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10 kWh lithium-ion battery storage unit mounted in the garage. I also keep a small backup battery built around an 18650 battery pack 12v 20a for lights, my Wi-Fi router, and charging phones during short outages.
The biggest difference has been peak-hour bill savings. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty of electricity during the day, but I still bought power after dinner when everyone was home. Now the battery charges from solar around lunchtime and discharges from about 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. On sunny days, my evening grid use is almost zero. My monthly bill has dropped from roughly $145 to between $55 and $75, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That feels more useful to me than watching the panels produce excess energy that I would otherwise send back to the grid for a low credit.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. The battery stopped discharging overnight even though the monitoring app showed a healthy charge level. I eventually found that the inverter had switched into backup-reserve mode after a brief outage. I lowered the reserve setting from 40% to 20%, and normal discharge resumed. I now leave a little more reserve during storm season, but I no longer panic when the battery does not drain completely.
The system has made my solar setup feel much more practical. I pay attention to battery state of charge, weather forecasts, and household loads, especially the water heater and air conditioner. It is not maintenance-free, but the quieter electric bills and emergency backup make the solar battery worthwhile for my home.
