Yesterday I checked my electricity app and saw something I had been hoping for: my evening usage barely touched the expensive peak rate.

I installed a 10kWh solar battery last spring alongside rooftop panels and a hybrid growatt inverter 48V Battery setup. The main reason was simple: store sunshine at lunchtime and use it after dinner, when our utility charges jump.

On a normal sunny day, the panels fill the battery by mid afternoon. The inverter automatically switches the house over at around 4:30, so the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and lights run from stored solar energy through the evening. I still pull a little grid power during cloudy weather, but my monthly bill has dropped about 30% compared with the same months last year. That’s more noticeable than I expected, especially because I work from home and normally use plenty of power after sunset.

The best part is peak-hour savings. Before the battery, I would run the dishwasher, induction cooktop, and heat pump while rates were highest. Now I let the battery handle those loads. It usually reaches 25% reserve before midnight, which I keep for outages. That reserve has already powered our modem and a few lamps during two short outages.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter showed a battery communication warning and stopped discharging. I turned off the battery breaker, waited five minutes, and restarted it as the manual suggested. The warning cleared, but I also tightened one loose communications cable connection. Since then it has behaved normally.

For me, the solar battery is not a magic way to eliminate bills. It works best when I shift flexible loads into daylight and save stored power for peak hours. If you are considering an off-grid battery or home energy storage system, I would size it around your actual evening demand, not just your panel output. That's the lesson I learned after living with mine.
