Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed my battery last autumn, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during the expensive evening hours. My setup is modest: rooftop solar, a hybrid inverter, and a 10 kWh LFP pack in the garage. I built the enclosure around a diy lfp battery project, although I bought the cells from a reputable supplier and had an electrician check the final wiring. That inspection was money well spent; it gave me confidence before I started relying on the system overnight.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, my family would come home, turn on the oven, induction cooktop, lights, and television, and pull power from the grid at the worst rate. Now the battery usually covers that whole window. On sunny days, the panels fill it by mid-afternoon, and I avoid roughly 8 to 12 kWh of peak-rate purchases. At my current tariff, that saves about $2.50 to $4 per day, depending on what we cook and whether the heat pump runs. It does not sound dramatic on one evening, but after several months I can see the difference in my bills.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me not to panic. During the first cold week, the battery stopped charging before sunrise and the app showed an error. I initially suspected a loose connection, but the manual explained that the battery’s low-temperature protection had activated. Once the garage warmed up, charging resumed normally. I later added a simple temperature sensor and moved a drafty vent, rather than trying to override the protection.
The battery has not made me energy-independent, especially through cloudy winter stretches. Still, watching the house run from stored solar after dark feels satisfying, and the quieter, lower evening bills make the system worthwhile for me, with very little daily attention.
