8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium solar battery beside my inverter, and the biggest difference has been what happens after sunset. Before, I sent almost all daytime solar back to the grid and then bought electricity during the expensive evening period. Now, the battery charges from my rooftop panels and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through dinner. On a normal weekday, I see about 7–9 kWh of stored energy used before morning.
That timing matters more than the advertised capacity for my household. My utility’s peak rate starts at 4 p.m., exactly when solar production begins fading. I programmed the battery to hold enough charge for those hours, and my monthly bill dropped from roughly $142 to $91 over the first full month. That is not a guaranteed result every month, because cloudy weather and heating use change everything, but the reduction was obvious.
The only hiccup came during the first week. The monitoring app showed the battery discharging, yet my basement outlet tester showed no output. I eventually discovered that the critical-loads breaker had not been switched on after the electrician finished. It was a five-minute fix, but I appreciated the lesson: I needed to understand the wiring instead of trusting a colorful app screen. I also added an 18v to 12v converter for a DC ventilation fan in the battery cabinet, keeping that accessory off the inverter and avoiding unnecessary standby consumption.
After three months, the system still feels pleasantly boring, which is what I wanted. The battery management system reports healthy temperatures, and I have not noticed capacity loss. I do check the state of charge before a storm, since several gray days can leave less reserve than expected. For me, the real win is not energy independence; it’s quietly using my own solar power when electricity costs the most.
