I installed a lithium solar battery system last spring after watching my evening electricity use climb every summer. The installation took most of a day. My installer mounted the battery in the garage beside the inverter and ran a new disconnect. I chose a 10-kilowatt-hour unit because I wanted to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset instead of sending it back to the grid for a small credit.
At first, the app was more useful than I expected. I could see the battery filling from about 10:30 a.m., then carrying the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. Before storage, my household usually used 7–9 kilowatt-hours after the sun went down. Now it is typically one or two, mostly overnight standby power and the occasional kettle.
Most noticeable is my peak-hour bill. My utility charges much more between 4 and 9 p.m. In the first month, my bill dropped by about $42. Across summer, the battery saved roughly $35–$55 per month. It does not make electricity free, but it has made our solar panels more valuable.
I did have one minor scare. During a hot afternoon, the battery stopped charging at 68%. The app showed “grid standby,” although the house still had power. The installer found a loose communications cable at the inverter and reseated it in ten minutes. Since then, charging has been steady. I now glance at the app every few days.
For anyone considering a home battery, I would first compare your time-of-use rates with the battery size. My lithiun battery works because our evening demand is predictable. Glad I started with one unit. It has turned excess daytime solar into practical nighttime savings, which is exactly what I hoped for.
