Nearly six months ago, I added a 10 kWh LiFePO4 solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity. My panels produce plenty during the day, but our household usage peaks after dinner, when the rate is highest. Before the battery, the dishwasher, heat pump, and electric water heater could push our daily bill surprisingly high.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. I had previously searched for an “inverter 12v 220v,” but my home setup needed a proper grid-tied unit rather than a small camping inverter. The battery app now shows solar generation, battery percentage, and grid consumption, which has made the savings easy to track.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100 percent by mid-afternoon. After sunset, it supplies the house until around midnight, sometimes later if we have not used the oven. Our electricity bill has dropped by roughly 35 to 45 percent, depending on the weather and how much heating we use. The biggest difference is during peak hours: instead of watching the meter climb while cooking dinner, I can see the battery discharging.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging at 92 percent for two days. I initially thought the solar battery was failing, but the installer explained that the battery management system was balancing its cells. After a firmware update and one full charge cycle, it returned to normal.
The system has not eliminated my bill, and cloudy winter days still require grid power. However, the practical benefit is clear: I use more of my own solar energy, avoid peak-rate purchases, and have backup power for essentials during short outages. For me, the storage battery was worthwhile because it changed when I used solar power, not just how much I generated. I am considering adding another battery before next winter, although I want to monitor capacity and degradation for another year first.
