Solution Solar Battery
Not having enough patience for complicated energy projects, I chose a home solar battery mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but after sunset the house immediately started pulling from the grid.
The installation was less disruptive than I expected. The installer mounted the lithium battery beside the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. The inverter luminous display was easy to read at night.
The first evening, I noticed the battery automatically taking over at 5 p.m., just as our utility's peak period began. I had programmed a reserve of twenty percent, so it would not drain completely before morning. That setting has made the biggest difference to our bills.
Before storage, our summer electric bill averaged about $180 a month. Since installing the 10 kWh battery, it has usually landed between $95 and $115, even when the air conditioner runs late. I am not claiming total energy independence; cloudy days still force us to buy power. However, the battery consistently shifts solar energy into the expensive hours, which is exactly why I bought it.
My favorite practical feature is the app's daily graph. I can see panels charging the battery around lunchtime, then watch the stored energy cover cooking, lights, and the heat pump after dinner. It also helped me catch one minor problem: a loose communications cable made the battery disappear from the app, although the house kept running normally. The installer reseated it in ten minutes, and monitoring returned.
I have not expanded the system yet, because ten kilowatt hours covers our overnight use. During a winter power outage, it carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and a few lights without any drama, which gave me more confidence than a spreadsheet ever could.
