Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar system already covered most daytime use, but the surplus used to disappear back into the grid for a credit that never felt worthwhile. The installer recommended a lithium po4 battery, and although the name made me laugh, the setup itself was pleasantly straightforward. They mounted it in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app. I chose a setting that charges from solar first and discharges between 4 and 9 p.m., when my utility rate is highest.
The first month was the convincing part. On sunny days, the battery reached full charge by early afternoon. After dinner, it carried the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television without any noticeable change. Before storage, my house pulled roughly 6 to 8 kilowatt-hours from the grid during peak hours. Now that number is usually below 1 kilowatt-hour. My daily bill savings are modest in winter, around $1 to $2, but in summer they average close to $3 per day. That adds up, and I like seeing the battery state of charge instead of guessing where my solar power went.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. During a very hot week, the app showed the battery offline, even though the inverter was producing normally. I restarted the gateway and checked the communication cable, but the warning remained. Support answered the next morning and identified a loose connector. Reseating it fixed everything in about five minutes.
Since then, the solar battery has been boring in the best possible way. It quietly charges during the day and powers the house at night. I still keep a small backup reserve for outages, though I have only tested that feature once. That matters.
