I installed a 10kWh LiFePO4 solar battery in my garage last spring, mainly because our evening electricity use was eating into the savings from our rooftop panels. The setup took most of a Saturday. My installer mounted the battery beside the hybrid inverter, connected it to the existing solar array, and walked me through the app. I expected a complicated process, but the wiring and commissioning were surprisingly tidy. The only awkward part was getting a stable Wi-Fi signal in the garage.
Once running, the battery changed how I use power. It charges during the day from excess solar, then supplies the house after sunset. I particularly noticed the difference during peak hours, when our utility charges its highest rate. Before storage, I would come home, cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and watch television while pulling expensive grid electricity. Now the battery handles nearly all of that. On a clear day, the app shows my grid import staying close to zero from afternoon through evening. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 35-45%, depending on weather and how much heating we use.
The most useful detail has been learning the battery settings rather than chasing a perfect percentage. I initially left the backup reserve at 20%, but after one rainy week, I raised it to 30%. That gave us more confidence during an outage without sacrificing much daily savings. I also learned that lifepo4 charging slows near full capacity, which is normal and not a fault. One morning the app reported a communication warning after a router update. I power-cycled the router and inverter, waited ten minutes, and the warning disappeared. No electrician visit was needed.
For me, benefit is predictability: I use solar power later, buy less from the grid, and still have backup energy when the lights go out.
