I installed a 10kWh lithium lifepo4 battery beside my inverter last spring. The setup was less dramatic than I expected. My installer finished the wiring in an afternoon, added a battery cabinet in the garage, and configured the energy storage system to charge from solar during the day and discharge after 4 p.m. I had to spend a week adjusting the settings because the first schedule left the battery nearly empty before dinner on cloudy days.

Now the battery usually reaches 95% by lunchtime when the sun is good. Our solar panels run the house, and the extra generation fills the battery instead of going back to the grid for a small credit. At dinner, the battery supplies the oven, lights, television, and my home office. I can see the inverter app showing discharge in real time, which has made me surprisingly aware of how much the kettle and electric dryer consume.

The biggest practical difference is our peak-hour bill. Before installing the battery, our evening usage pushed the monthly electricity bill to about $185 in summer. Since adding it, the same household routine costs around $105, although weather and utility rates vary. That roughly $80 monthly reduction feels more useful than the occasional export payment. During a two-day rainy stretch, the battery only made it through part of the evening, so I still imported power, but it never stopped working or needed attention.

The system is quiet apart from a faint fan sound when charging hard. I check the state of charge every few days, not constantly. For me, this solar battery has been less about energy independence and more about making my existing solar setup useful after sunset. The lithium battery has also given us backup power during two outages, keeping the refrigerator, router, and a few lights running.
