I installed a 10kWh solar battery system last spring after getting tired of watching my electricity bills jump every evening. The setup was straightforward for my electrician: the inverter went beside the solar equipment, and the battery sits in a cool utility room. I chose LiFePO4, partly because I wanted a safer chemistry, and partly because the quoted pack used lifepo4 zellen 280ah cells. There was no dramatic construction, just a breaker, monitoring cable, and several hours of testing.
The biggest difference is what happens between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our utility charges its peak rate. On sunny days, my rooftop panels fill the battery by early afternoon, and the inverter automatically holds that energy back. After dinner, I run the kitchen lights, refrigerator, television, router, and heat pump from stored solar power instead of pulling from the grid.
Before installing storage, that evening window regularly added roughly four dollars to my daily bill. Since installation, my utility statements are typically $70–$95 lower per month during spring and summer. That is not a perfect comparison because weather and rates change, but the savings are obvious when I compare similar sunny weeks.
I also appreciate seeing the battery state of charge in the app. On cloudy days it may reach only 60%, but I still reserve 20% for outages and use the rest during peak hours.
My hiccup came in January. A firmware update left the inverter showing “standby” even though the battery was charged. I shut off the battery disconnect for five minutes, restarted it, and the status returned to normal. The installer later told me the update had failed halfway. It has not happened again.
I have not expanded the system yet, though the wiring can support another battery module. For now, the current capacity covers our evening routine comfortably.
