Nearly a year ago, I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system. Before that, my panels sent excess power back to the grid for a modest credit, while I bought electricity at the expensive evening rate. The battery has changed the timing of my energy use more than the amount of solar I generate.
Most weekdays, I get home around five, turn on the oven, run the dishwasher, and start laundry just as the sun is going down. Now the solar battery covers those loads instead of pulling from the grid. My online inverter manages the changeover automatically, and I rarely notice it.
The clearest difference is on my bill. Last summer, my average monthly bill was about $145. Since installing the battery, it has usually landed between $60 and $75, despite similar air-conditioning use. In July, I paid $68. I still have a connection fee and buy some electricity during several cloudy days, so I am not claiming energy independence. Still, shifting consumption into stored solar has saved roughly $80 per month compared with last year.
One small surprise was how much the battery responds to weather. On a bright day, it fills by lunchtime, but on overcast days it may reach only 40%. I learned not to schedule every appliance for evening just because the app shows a high state of charge. The forecast matters more.
I also had one minor troubleshooting moment: the battery stopped discharging one night after a firmware update. The inverter app showed it was online, but the house was quietly drawing from the grid. I restarted the system from its settings, waited five minutes, and normal operation returned. Support later confirmed it was a temporary communication glitch.
The biggest benefit is simply lower peak-hour usage here at home.
