I installed a solar energy storage battery last spring, mainly because my utility’s peak-hour rates had become painful. My setup is a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate prismatic cell battery paired with 8 kW of rooftop solar. I chose that chemistry for its safety reputation and because I wanted something that would cope with daily cycling without constant babysitting.
The biggest difference showed up between 4 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, I would come home, turn on the oven, run the dishwasher, and watch the electricity meter race. Now, the inverter pulls stored solar power during those hours. On a typical sunny day, my evening grid use drops from roughly 8 kWh to 1 or 2 kWh. That has cut my monthly bill by about $45–$60, depending on weather and how much laundry I do. It is not a dramatic overnight miracle, but seeing the battery discharge instead of buying expensive peak electricity feels satisfying.
I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its usual time. The app showed plenty of state of charge, yet the house switched to grid power. I checked the inverter first, then found that the backup reserve had somehow been reset to 100%. Once I lowered that reserve to 20%, normal operation returned.
Since then, I check the state of charge every few days, especially before a storm. I also keep the reserve high when outages are forecast, since refrigeration and the internet matter more to me than squeezing out the last dollar of savings. For my household, solar self-consumption has been the win: fewer peak charges, quieter evenings, and less dependence on the grid. I would make the same choice again, though I’d budget for professional installation and leave room in the electrical panel for future battery expansion.
