Every evening, I used to watch our electricity meter climb when the sun went down. My rooftop solar panels produced plenty during the day, but our electric bill still felt painful because the family cooked, showered, and ran the dishwasher during peak hours. That changed after I installed a tesla power wall battery in the garage.
The setup took most of a day. The installer explained the battery would charge from excess solar first, then feed the house after sunset. I liked seeing the app show the energy flow in real time, although the first evening was confusing: the battery seemed to pause at 98%. It turned out the system was balancing its cells, and it reached full charge later without any intervention.
The biggest difference is our peak-hour usage. I set the battery to reserve 20% for outages, and it usually covers the house from about 5:00 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, we use almost no grid electricity after dinner. Our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 in summer to around $70–$90, depending on air-conditioning. The savings are not identical each month, but watching less power come from the utility during expensive hours has been genuinely satisfying.
One night, the battery stopped discharging at 11:00 p.m., even though the app showed stored energy. I checked the breaker and found it had tripped after a storm. Resetting it restored normal operation. I later added a surge protector and learned that simple troubleshooting can save a service call.
The battery has made us more deliberate about solar energy storage. We run laundry while panels are producing, then let the battery handle evening loads. During cloudy stretches, I buy grid power, but the combination of panels, battery backup, and time-of-use scheduling has made our household cheaper and less vulnerable to outages.
