I installed my home battery last spring because evening rates became ridiculous. We had six kilowatts of rooftop solar, but by dinner the panels were quiet and we were pulling expensive grid power. The battery has changed that routine more than expected.
I chose a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a hybrid inverter. My DIY home battery setup was not fully DIY: I mounted the cabinet and planned the route myself, but hired a licensed electrician for connections, permits, and inspection. The app showed the battery charging on the first sunny afternoon, a satisfying moment.
The biggest practical difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge during those peak hours. Before installation, our monthly bill averaged around $210 in summer. Since adding storage, it has usually landed between $95 and $125, even though our air-conditioning use has not changed much. The battery does not erase the bill—we still pay fixed charges and buy grid electricity on cloudy days—but avoiding those peak-rate hours is where the savings come from.
I did have one scare during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 30 percent, even though the app said the reserve was set to 15 percent. After checking the event log, I found a backup-protection setting overriding my schedule. I changed it, restarted the inverter, and watched the battery resume that evening. I now leave a higher reserve before storms, because having backup power matters more to me than squeezing out every last dollar.
So far, the storage system has been quiet, predictable, and more useful than expected. I check the solar battery app once or twice a week, not constantly, and the best feature is simply seeing our household use its own daytime energy after sunset.
