I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate home battery last spring. My rooftop solar system already covered much of our daytime use, but the dishwasher, cooking, and heat-pump water heater all seemed to switch on after sunset.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup-loads panel, and spent most of the afternoon checking settings. I asked questions, especially about lithium iron phosphate cell voltage and how the battery-management system would react to a cold night. He explained that the app watches individual cell balance, temperature, state of charge, and charging current automatically. My job was mainly to choose a reserve level.
I set the reserve at 25 percent and programmed the system to charge from solar first, then discharge during the 4-to-9 p.m. peak window. The first month was surprisingly satisfying. On sunny days, the battery reached 100 percent before lunch, then carried our evening load until bedtime. Our electricity bill fell by about $68 compared with the same month last year, despite similar weather. That saving is more meaningful to me than the advertised cycle-life numbers because I can see it every month.
The best practical improvement is that I no longer think about timing laundry or dinner around sunlight. I still check the solar battery app, but mostly out of curiosity. One evening, the battery stopped discharging at 54 percent. I found the backup reserve had accidentally been raised during a firmware update. Lowering it restored normal operation immediately.
After eight months, capacity appears steady, the inverter is quiet, and the battery has handled several outages without drama. It has not eliminated our power bill, but it has made our solar panels far more useful after dark. For my household, that everyday convenience is the payoff.
