Solution Solar Battery
Using my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I had six rooftop panels installed first, but the daytime surplus was mostly exported for a credit that never felt as useful as the power itself. Adding a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery finally let me keep that energy for the evening.
My installer paired it with an auto inverter and a simple phone app. Setup took most of a morning. The electrician mounted the battery beside the garage, ran new conduit, and explained the backup settings without drowning me in jargon. I chose a reserve of 25%, so the system would keep some emergency capacity during an outage.
At first, I watched the app constantly, especially around 4:00pm when solar production dipped. The battery usually charges fully by early afternoon. After dinner, it powers our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and sometimes the dishwasher. That timing matters because our utility uses expensive peak-hour rates from 4pm to 9pm. Before storage, our evening usage regularly pushed the bill above $180. Over the last three months, it has averaged about $112, even though we ran the air conditioner during a hot spell. The savings are not theoretical to me; I see them on each statement.
I did have one minor scare. One morning, the app showed “offline” and the battery was not discharging. I checked the breaker and found the dedicated communications switch had been bumped while we stored bicycles. A quick reset brought the solar battery back online, and the inverter resumed normal operation. Since then, I have left the switch covered. For me, the biggest win is predictable power.
