Running my home on solar battery storage has changed how I think about electricity bills, especially during the evening peak period. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery alongside a growatt 5000w solar inverter after getting tired of sending excess daytime solar back to the grid for very little credit.
The setup was fairly straightforward, although I needed an electrician to tidy up the wiring and configure the battery management system. Once everything was operating, I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. That schedule has made the biggest practical difference. Our cooking, lights, television, refrigerator, and occasional heat-pump use now run mostly from stored solar energy after sunset.
Before adding the battery, my electricity bill averaged around $190 per month. Since installing it, the average has been closer to $105, depending on weather and how much heating we use. I am not completely off-grid, but reducing grid consumption during expensive peak hours has saved more than I expected. The battery usually reaches full charge by early afternoon in summer, while in winter it may only reach 60–80 percent.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the inverter display and found that the backup reserve had accidentally been set to 30 percent during a firmware update. Lowering the reserve to 15 percent restored normal operation. It was a simple setting, but it reminded me that solar monitoring is worth checking occasionally.
The system is quiet, automatic, and mostly forgettable, which is exactly what I wanted. I still watch the weather forecast and adjust the battery reserve before a storm or power outage. For my household, the combination of solar panels, lithium battery storage, and reliable inverter control has delivered noticeable daily bill savings without changing our routine.
