Solution Solar Battery
I installed a home battery last spring, mainly to stop buying so much expensive electricity in the evening. My rooftop solar panels produce plenty during the day, but our family is usually out then. We come home around five, switch on lights, cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and charge phones and laptops. Before the battery, that was exactly when our electricity rate jumped.
The system uses lithium ion modules with a usable capacity of about 10 kWh. On a sunny day, the panels charge the battery by early afternoon, and the battery takes over automatically when solar production falls. I rarely think about it now. The app shows solar generation, battery percentage, and household consumption, which is useful without becoming something I constantly monitor.
The most noticeable change has been my evening bill. During the first full month, our peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 260 kWh to about 70 kWh. Our bill was around $85 lower than the previous month, although weather and our schedules were not identical. In summer, the savings are better because the battery runs the air conditioner for several hours after sunset. It does not eliminate the bill, but it has made the expensive part much less painful.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight and remained at 100 percent. I checked the app and found that a backup reserve setting had changed from 15 percent to 100 percent. Adjusting it fixed the issue immediately. That experience made me appreciate having clear controls instead of needing a technician for every small problem.
The battery has also helped during two short outages. It kept the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, a few lights, and my office running without interruption. I would not call the system completely invisible, but it has been practical, quiet, and predictable. For me, the biggest win is using my own solar energy after sunset instead of selling it cheaply and buying power back at peak rates.
